Gartner analyst Partha Iyengar advised CIOs to continue to educate the board on evolving technology related disruptions and set expectations appropriately at Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo on the Gold Coast. AGI, the ability of machines to match or exceed human intelligence and solve problems they never encountered during training, provokes vigorous debate and a mix of awe and dystopia. It not only augments and accelerates design in many fields, it also has the potential to “invent” novel designs or objects that humans may have missed otherwise.

I envision a world where generative AI is embedded in most products, empowering individuals to unleash their creativity and enabling them to tackle complex challenges that were previously daunting. Rather than replacing human intelligence, generative AI augments our capabilities, allowing us to achieve more than ever before. With the assistance of generative AI, mundane coding tasks such as code reviews, unit tests and reviewing architectural patterns can be automated. This technology acts as a helper, providing developers with assistants to handle routine aspects of coding.

Academic assessment approaches must evolve beyond isolated assignments toward more continuous, data-driven views. Combining multiple formative and summative approaches continues to offer an enduring path forward. In parallel, leveraging generative AI tools to streamline productivity and create credible first drafts of content or enhance conversational user interfaces to better support students will likely combine to support improved educational experiences. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a specific implementation of generative AI that creates conversational content, reached over one million users less than one week after it was made available as a research release in November 2022.

Beyond ChatGPT: The Future of Generative AI for Enterprises

Service providers may have been holding off due to uncertainty over data protection and customer privacy issues, but these should start to be resolved as AI providers adapt their services to meet market requirements. An example is Adobe’s integration of generative AI into its Firefly design tools, trained entirely on proprietary data, to alleviate fears that copyright and ownership could be a problem in the future. Many of the generative AI-driven technologies in the report need to be combined in order to create practical services, Gartner noted. Data and analytics leaders would be well-served to consider investing first in innovations that have been packaged together as business solutions, such as computer vision, knowledge graphs, smart robots, intelligent applications and AI cloud services.

“We are starting to see adoption of these services from high-profile vendors that are using them to widen their reach,” said Anthony Mullen, research director at Gartner. “To remain relevant, technology vendors must integrate AI into every aspect of their devices, or face marginalization.” Generative AI is a powerful trend that harnesses AI applications such as ChatGPT and Bard to create new and original content.
